The City of Toronto is celebrating Toronto’s diverse communities on May 16, 2019 with its fifth annual Toronto Newcomer Day. All are invited to join in celebrations to welcome newcomers in Toronto with activities and entertainment at this showcase of Toronto’s diverse communities.
An important community-building event
According to Vera Dodic, Manager, Toronto Newcomer Office, City of Toronto, the Toronto Newcomer day has become an important community building event bringing together thousands of people: newcomers as well as hundreds of community and government agencies and other stakeholders. “In addition to providing information about important services, as a symbolic ‘welcome’ to newcomers, it promotes Toronto as a diverse, inclusive and welcoming metropolitan city.”
“Many newcomers come from countries that are very different from Canada, with different service systems and often from difficult circumstances. They come eager to rebuild their lives. Providing them with information so that they can start their settlement as soon as possible is very important, as well as making them feel welcome. But the Newcomer Day goes beyond that. Many of the 25,000 people that attended the event since 2015 are not newcomers but want to be part of the Newcomer Day and show what our city is about. This year, more than 100 agencies, including City divisions, are participating, and hundreds of staff and volunteers.”
Several other cities have had their first annual Newcomer Day this past year including Hamilton and Brampton.
