THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday said that no Filipino was hurt in the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Papua New Guinea (PNG) on May 7.
Chargé d’Affaires and Philippine head of mission Mary Grace Villamayor said that there were about 36,000 Filipinos in PNG.
She said the Philippine embassy in Port Moresby has been touch with the Filipino community in the affected cities of Lae and Kokopo, and with the Filipino association in PNG.
Villamayor said that no tsunami warning was issued by the USGS-linked Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The US Geological Survey placed the epicenter at 33 kilometers from the town of Bulolo.
The earthquake was strong enough to be felt in Port Moresby, 250 kilometers away, Villamayor said.
She added that the embassy was continuously monitoring the situation and was ready to assist Filipinos affected by the tremor. BERNADETTE E. TAMAYO
