Asean, allies open Naval exercises in South Korea

MILITARY exercises between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and its allies formally began on Wednesday in Busan, South Korea with a focus on maritime security.
Capt. Roy Vincent Trinidad, commander of the Philippine Navy contingent, aboard the BRP Andres Bonifacio, participated in the opening ceremony of the Asean Defense Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) Maritime Security and Counterterrorism Exercises.
Rear Admiral Lee Seong Yeoul, commander of the Korean Navy’s 3rd Fleet, welcomed the participating nations for the combined exercises on maritime security.
Lee said the exercise would be an opportunity for all the navies to hone joint response capability on maritime security issues and to further promote friendship, partnership and relationship among nations.
Vice Admiral Park Ki Kyun, commander of the Korean Navy Fleet, emphasized the importance of maritime security within the region, saying that the exercises “take a great meaning to establish defense cooperation system and promote friendships.”
“The exercise will provide an opportunity to stabilize the maritime security environment in the region by promoting defense cooperation and trust among participating nations,” he said.
Eighteen countries will be participating in the multinational maritime security exercises aimed at increasing maritime cooperation, promoting information sharing, establishing a collaborative system and enhancing each other’s multinational response capability to maritime security issues.
Participating nations are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the United States, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Observer countries are Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, New Zealand and Russia. DEMPSEY REYES
