A magnitude 4.5 aftershock from the earthquake that shook parts of Luzon this week was felt in Metro Manila early Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs Research Assistant Bhenz Rodriguez said the tremor at 2:02 a.m. was the highest recorded aftershock so far since the 6.1 magnitude quake that struck on Monday. That quake’s epicenter was in Castillejos, Zambales but its intensity was felt in most of Central Luzon and in Metro Manila.
The aftershocks on Wednesday were also felt in Olongapo City at Intensity 3 and Intensity 2 in Quezon City, Muntinlupa City, and Taguig City.
Rodriguez said Phivolcs was still closely monitoring the aftershocks that could last for several weeks.
“Possible pa na magkaroon ng mga ganitong klaseng matataas na lindol. Nag-re-release pa rin ng energy itong event na ito ,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriquez said, however, that the number of aftershocks was slowing down.
As of 7 a.m., Phivolcs has recorded 622 aftershocks, 93 plotted or confirmed by more instruments, and nine felt by people. The strength of the aftershocks ranged from Magnitude 1.4 to 4.5 and Intensities 1 to 3.
