Veteran Carlos Anton and his 14-year old son Iñigo again raised the bar by finishing first and second overall, respectively, in the fourth round of Philippine Autocross Championship (PAC) held in the business district of Clark, Pampanga, last weekend.
With their Mark Young-Mohspeed prepared Honda CRX, the father and son duo set the fastest times of the day in different styles with Iñigo taking his fourth straight win in the Open Class.
Iñigo set the pace early on but was immediately eclipsed by his father. Champion Slalom driver and Vios Cup racer Estefano Rivera then took the best time in his Honda Civic EG Hatch and made it a three-way battle that extended until the early evening.
Yokohama driver Carlos took command and was able to set a faster time that no one could beat. Iñigo tried to beat his father in his last run but could only beat Estefano’s time. As a result, Iñigo finished second overall and Rivera third.
“The last thing we expected was a 1-2 finish today after Iñigo’s engine blew yesterday,” said a happy overall champion Carlos after the race. “It’s amazing how Iñigo was able to adapt to my car right away and that gave me a scare in the end.”
Unknown to many, the 14-year old racing phenom’s Honda EF blew an engine and had to use the same Honda CRX of Carlos for the race. Since the EF and CRX were set up differently, Iñigo had limited time to get acquainted with it but still managed to get the second best time to win his fourth straight Open Class Championship.
“I’m so thankful that we got the 1-2 win today and the Open Class for the fourth time. I tried to beat my dad but he was just too fast today,” remarked a jubilant Iñigo. “Since this was a double points race, we really needed these wins! Thank you to our Mark Young Racing Team for making this possible.”
Carlos now holds a commanding lead in the PAC overall standings with Iñigo coming in second and Estefano in third. The younger Anton holds the same first-place standing in the Open Class with his four wins, placing him away ahead of the competition.
