THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) put its jails on full alert from April 18 to 20 in preparation for the influx of visitors for the Holy Week.
“We are expecting the influx of visitors that is why I directed all our Regional Directors to supervise their respective jurisdictions to accommodate the visitors and prevent any untoward incidents,” BJMP Officer-in-Charge Allan Iral said in a statement.
He said that key officials of the national headquarters would start their inspections on the operational readiness of jail units this week.
All wardens are also expected to intensify their security procedures and employ necessary safety measures for all inmates and personnel.
They are also told to conduct roundtable discussions or dry-runs of their contingency plans in any untoward incidents.
Iral said that the BJMP would allow activities for its Catholic inmates but would not allow self-flagellation.
“There will be a mass, devotions and prayers and confessions to be administered by our Chaplains in jails,” he said.
“While we encourage our PDL (persons deprived of liberty) to pray and reflect on the spirit of the season, we don’t allow self-flagellation in jails as another method of repentance,” Iral said. ROY NARRA
