Senators on Tuesday honored Philippine soldiers in commemorating the Araw ng Kagitingan.

Senator Sonny Angara paid tribute to the brave men “who defend us and have fallen while doing so”. He also cited the more than 100 soldiers who died and were hurt in the siege against terrorists in Marawi City last 2017.

“Saludo kami sa inyo,” Angara said in a social media post.

Sen. Nancy Binay also honored war veterans and “mga nagbigay ng pinakamataas na sakripisyo para sa ating kasarinlan.”

“Ating gunitain ang kadakilaan ng ating mga Bayaning Sundalo ngayong #ArawNgKagitingan! ,” Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito wrote on Twitter.

Aside from the heroes of World War II, Sen. Bam Aquino also recognized barangay health workers who are “important in spreading information on public health.”

Sen. Cynthia Villar, meanwhile, said she hopes “the Filipino youth will draw inspiration from” war veterans and their sacrifices.

“Nawa’y maging karapat-dapat tayo sa dugo at luha nila. Huwag nating sayangin ang ipinaglaban nila,” Sen. Grace Poe, for her part, said.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros, meanwhile, said the occasion calls for people “to exhibit courage and resilience, to stand bravely and fight.”

Sen. Joel Villanueva said the commemoration should remind Filipinos to continue fighting for the country’s independence and democracy, and against those who threaten its sovereignty.

Sen. Leila de Lima appealed to the public, that in remembering the lessons of the Araw ng Kagitingan, to be vigilant and express dismay on the “negligence being committed” by the government, and to show the desire for “real change”. (Vanne Elaine Terrazola)
