KAMPONG Speu Provincial Court on Saturday interned and filed charges against one of the truck drivers involved in the accident that injured 12 garment workers, eight seriously, according to report yesterday.
Men Vannak, vice deputy court director and investigating judge at Kampong Speu Provincial Court, has charged 25-year-old Sam Chanthy with reckless driving under Article 83 of the Road Traffic Law. “I order the detainment of Mr. Chanthy in Kampong Speu prison. The prison warden must hold the accused until otherwise ordered.”
According to reports, the accident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday. The truck was taking 49 workers to their factory when it side-swiped another truck. Five women lost their arms because they held the side of the truck to brace themselves.
Sam Chanthy was arrested at the scene, but the other driver got away and is being searched for by the provincial police.
Chek Borin, director of the Provincial Labor Department, told Khmer Times on Thursday that 12 workers were injured, eight seriously. They were sent to Calmette Hospital.
Based on the Labor Ministry’s annual report, 1,692 traffic accidents involving garment workers were recorded in 2018, resulting in 40 deaths and 1,854 injuries.
