METRO Manila’s hottest temperature so far in 2019 was recorded on Saturday, the state weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) registered a temperature of 35.4 degrees Celcius (C) at the Science Garden weather station in Diliman, Quezon City.

Pagasa weather specialist Gener Quitlong said that recorded temperatures so far were still at normal levels during the dry season but indicated that hot temperatures came earlier this year.

A higher temperature of 36.4 C was recorded at the weather station at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which marked the highest in the country. Quitlong, however, explained that the Science Garden weather station was used as the representative temperature indicator for Metro Manila as other factors affected the NAIA measurement, which has a nearby airport.

Across the country, the highest temperature reached 36.3 C in Isabela on Saturday. Highest temperature for recorded nationwide was at 37.8 degrees C in Cotabato City on March 26.

Quitlong said that hot temperatures were attributed to the prevailing easterlies weather system, where winds were coming from the Pacific Ocean; reduced rainfall during the dry season and as an effect of the weak El Niño; and longer exposure to sunlight due to earlier sunrise and later sunset.

A higher heat index or human discomfort measurement of 45.1 C was registered in Sangley Point Cavite, followed by 44.5 C in Ambulong, Batangas on Saturday. In Metro Manila, heat index reached 37.2 C on Saturday.

Heat index of 41-54 C marks a “danger” warning to the human body that could likely lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion and heat stroke with continued activity.

Quitlong advised avoiding going outdoors from 12noon to 4 p.m., when highest temperatures were recorded. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
