The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday clarified that trucks and buses are exempted from the 60 kilometers per hour speed limit because they are only allowed to travel as fast as 50 kph on major thoroughfares.
Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago, MMDA spokesperson, said there is an existing policy regulating the speed limit of trucks and buses which is MMDA Regulation No. 17-003.
“There is already an MMDA regulation for buses and trucks. MMDA Regulation No. 17-003 only permits buses and trucks to travel as fast as 50 kph,” Pialago said after some netizens slammed the agency for exempting buses and trucks from the new policy.
The agency recently announced that the 60-kph speed limit will be imposed on EDSA and other major roads soon following the approval of MMDA Regulation No. 19-001, Series of 2019, by the Metro Manila Council.
Pialago said motorists who will violate the speed limit will be fined R1,000. The 60-kph speed limit seeks to eradicate accidents on major roads caused by overspeeding.
It will be imposed on Recto Ave. in Manila, President Quirino Ave. (formerly South Superhighway) in Manila, Araneta Ave. in Quezon City, CP Garcia Ave., Quezon City, Southeast Metro Manila Expressway;
Roxas Blvd., Taft Ave., South Luzon Expressway, Shaw Blvd., Ortigas Ave., Ramon Magsaysay Blvd., Manila; Aurora Blvd., Quezon City; Quezon Ave., Commonwealth Ave., and A. Bonifacio Ave., Quezon City; Rizal Ave., Manila; Del Pan, Manila; Marcos Highway, and McArthur Highway.
MMDA Regulation No. 19-001 was published on newspapers last April 4. (Jel Santos)
