UP survives UE at UAAP 81 women’s volleyball

THE University of the Philippines Lady Maroons survived a gritty University of the East Lady Warriors in five sets, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-11, in the women’s volleyball tournament of UAAP Season 81 on Wednesday.
Playing without an injured Isa Molde, veteran Marian Buitre led the charge as she registered a season-best 19 points off 16 attacks and three kill blocks and 17 digs to help the Lady Maroons get back on the winning track as they tie the University of Santo Tomas with a 6-4 win-loss record.
Tots Carlos gave ample support with 16 points on 13 attacks, 24 digs and 24 excellent receptions. Marist Layug contributed 15 markers and Ayel Estranero tallied 34 excellent sets.
The Lady Warriors dropped to 2-8 and lost another five-setter for the fourth time.
Menrez had 23 points with 20 coming off attacks while Judith Abil got 22 markers, 29 digs and 19 excellent receptions for UE.
Baliton had 10 points, setter Lai Bendong tallied 39 excellent sets while graduating libero Kath Arado posted 35 digs and 31 excellent receptions.
