MARIA Ressa, CEO of news site Rappler and president of Rappler Holdings Corporation (RHC), on Wednesday morning pleaded not guilty to tax evasion charges.
The trial before the Court of Tax Appeals’s (CTA) First Division will start on May 15.
“We did nothing wrong and I’m very proud of Rappler and what we’ve accomplished,” Ressa said in an interview after the arraignment.
She also said in part that “these cases are all politically motivated.”
In two of the cases, it was alleged that the accused failed to supply correct and accurate information in the quarterly value-added tax return of RHC for the third and fourth quarters of 2015, respectively. These two cases involve alleged deficiency value-added tax totaling P21.5 million.
In one case, it was alleged that the accused failed to supply correct and accurate information in RHC’s income tax return for 2015.
In another case, it was alleged that the accused attempted to evade paying P48.72-million in income tax.
The court allowed Ressa to travel abroad from this Wednesday until April 14 to Italy for a speaking engagement and to New York for a forum.
