President Rodrigo Duterte warned that he would fire more officials next week, as he vowed to give his “best shot” to get rid of corruption in government.
In his speech during the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s distribution of grants to beneficiaries in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, Duterte said he was waiting for the report of the concerned officials before deciding on their fate.
“Lessen corruption. I will fire more next week. Hinihintay ko lang ‘yung report nila (I’m just waiting for their report),” the President said.
“But sabi ko na (I said), ‘You give me your report and if I find it justifiable, you can stay. Pero kung may corruption (But if there is corruption), I’m sorry,’” he added.
The President did not name the officials, but last week he issued a similar warning to officials of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) over their failure to prevent the water crisis that dogged parts of Metro Manila.
Duterte required the MWSS officials to submit a report on the water shortage. He said he would “decide whether heads will roll or whether the contracts of the concessionaires will be terminated” based on their reports.
“I will not make a prejudgment, I asked them–everybody concerned–to submit a report by April 10 and I will decide before April 15,” he said.
Duterte said he was trying to his best to curb corruption in government, citing the ongoing purge of erring public servants.
“I will try my very best, give it the best shot to bring down corruption,” the President said.
