When International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. and similarly undefeated four-division belt-owner Mikey Garcia battle each other on Sunday (Manila time), one of the ringside spectator will be Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao.
And whenever the fighting senator is in the United States, expect the perfect American 50-0 win-loss owner Floyd Mayweather Jr. to be not far behind.
And as sure as the sun rises in the East, Mayweather will be also at ringside watching the fight, raising the chance that the two arch-rivals will again meet face-to-face.
Expect, too, that their meeting will, to a certain extent deviate fans and media alike interest in the Spence-Garcia encounter.
Who knows, the two might, once more, be talking about a Pacquiao-Mayweather 2, which has been subject of talks since they met “for the first time” in Tokyo a little over a year ago.
That will be a repeat of the duo’s 2015 dull confrontation at the MGM Grand won by Mayweather by a dull unanimous decision, but nevertheless, broke all existing pay-per view and gate records.
Pacquiao and Mayweather, it can be recalled, met three times more after that Tokyo meeting last January during Pacquiao’s preparations for his Andre Broner title fight fueling speculations that the Super Fight 2 was, indeed, in the works.
They met twice during a pair of NBA Games at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, then minutes before the Pacquiao-Broner actual fight when the unbeaten American visited the Filipino in his locker room to wish the latter good luck.
Since then, however, Mayweather sounded remiss on his promise to fight Manny for the second time, expressing desire instead on fighting exhibition matches against non-boxers in shorter distance and small purses.
Expected , too, to watch the Spence-Garcia confrontation are officials of the Premier Boxing Champions, headed by Al Haymon and other boxing personalities.
Which, raises too, hopes that if Mayweather stands pat on his decision not to meet Pacquiao, whoever wins between Spence and Garcia could be the reigning WBA regular welterweight champ’s next opponent.
