A staff from the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia and three Filipino accomplices were arrested in Makati City for allegedly extorting money from a student, identified by police as Yemeni, during an operation late Wednesday.
Makati City police said Fahad Almusabih, identified as Sudanese; Miller Apao, Jonathan Abenasa and Hernan Gonzales are all living in Metro Manila.
Police Senior Insp. Gideon Ines Jr., Makati assistant police chief for operations, said the four were arrested at a Cebuana Lhuillier branch along Makati Avenue in Poblacion Village at 6 p.m. on Wednesday
Ines said the entrapment operation was set up after Ahmed Mohammed Muneer Mohammed sought police help over fears of deportation after Almusabih had offered him a fast-tracked renewal of his expired student visa.
Mohammed, who studies in a Baguio City school, told police that on March 4, he paid Almusabih P9,000 in exchange for his visa.
Mohammed said it was agreed that Almusabih would give him his student visa later that day but showed up empty-handed and instead asked for another payment of P16, 000.
The police official said the suspect had also demanded P100,000 from Mohammed and threatened to send him packing over his expired visa on March 8, which prompted the student to seek police assistance.
Mohammed said he had handed his passport to Almusabih, who identified himself to police as an attaché of the Royal Saudi Embassy and with a card from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the embassy.
The suspects are detained at the Makati Central Police Station where they are awaiting charges of robbery and extortion.
