THE Philippines continues to enjoy fiscal stability despite the wider-than-programmed budget deficit by the national government last year, Moody’s Investors Service said.
In a report released late on Wednesday, the credit ratings agency took note of the national government’s full-year fiscal performance for 2018, showing the budget deficit widening to 3.3 percent of gross domestic product from 2.2 percent in 2017.
“Although wider budget shortfalls typically reflect a credit-negative deterioration in other fiscal metrics, measures of the Philippine government’s indebtedness and debt affordability have remained stable or continued to improve,” it said.
Moody’s noted that the wider deficit in 2018 resulted from increased revenue and expenditures, which benefited from the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law. MAYVELIN U. CARABALLO
