SEN. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino 4th on Sunday raised the need to designate one government doctor in each of the 44,000 villages (barangay) nationwide.

The re-electionist senator, who is running under the opposition Otso Diretso, was one of nine senatotial candidates who attended the first leg of ABS-CBN’s “Harapan 2019” townhall debate.

The other senatorial candidates who presented their platforms during the debate were Glenn Chong, Chel Diokno, Larry Gadon, Florin Hilbay, Jiggy Manicad, Samira Gutoc, Willie Ong, and Francis Tolentino.

When asked what he would do to improve health services in remote areas, Aquino said, “Now that the college education is already free, it is not improbable that we will add more scholarships for potential doctors.”

“We can add scholarship [grants] so we can have doctor for every barangay. We can identify medical students in our 44,000 barangay,” Aquino said.

Asked whether he approved lowering the minimum age of criminal liability from 15 years old to 12, he said, “Di ako sang-ayon.Tulong ang kailangan nila di kulong (I don’t agree. They need help and not detention.”

He lamented that the Juvenile Justice Law was not being properly implemented such as the need to fund the establishment of Bahay Pag-asa (House of Hope) or reformatory centers for children in conflict with the law (CICL).

Pressed to cite some of the good things that President Rodrigo Duterte had done, Aquino said, “Maayos at maganda ang suporta sa mga SMEs (There is proper and good support small and medium enterprises).

Asked about the supposed negative aspect of the President’s governance, Aquino said, “Laging kumikiling sa karahasan para sa lahat ng solusyon n’ya sa bayan (He always tend to resort to violence as the solution to the country’s problems).”

Aquino also expressed concern for the welfare of his cousin, actress Kris Aquino, whenever she was embroiled in controversies.
