FOR the first time in election history, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will require candidates to report their “social media” expenses in their statement of campaign expenditures (SOCE).

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said on Tuesday that it would not be easy but it has to be started to make candidates toe the line.

Jimenez said the Comelec’s Education and Information Department will monitor social media campaigns.

“People have been reporting on their SOCE for quite a while now but they have never reported on their social media expenses, and this is the first time that they would be doing that,” he said.

Jimenez said that the regulations maybe imperfect but it was not a signal to candidates to take them lightly.

Jimenez said that coordination has been made with Facebook and would be meeting with the representatives from the social media giant again to discuss the rules.
