Davao Del Norte: Davao City’s Aethan Razy Fujita and Tacurong City’s Maria Veronica Ilagan won gold medals in their respective events in arnis competitions of the 2019 Batang Pinoy Mindanao qualifying on Monday at the City Mall activity center here in Tagum City.
Fujita impressed the judges with a near perfect performance to tally a leading 9.50 score and claim the top honors in the cadet boys’ non-traditional individual single weapon event.
“We got lucky that we are able to bounce back here after we lost in DAVRAA (Davao Regional Athletic Association). Tagum also performed really well. Unexpected [to win the first gold] but I’m really happy for him,” Davao City arnis coach Niño Jay M. Bareña told The Manila Times.
Fujita, 10, won over silver medalist Eli Gabriel Panabay of Tagum City and bronze medalist Emmanuel Josh Nacion also of Davao City, who posted 9.46 and 9.43 scores, respectively.
On the other hand, Ilagan scored 9.60 points to cop the cadet girls’ traditional individual single weapon title, beating Rian Joy Artajo of Butuan City who earned 9.43 points for the silver medal and Lian Rose Anquilita of Iligan City, who posted 9.33 points for the bronze.
All medalists will qualify to the Batang Pinoy National Finals scheduled in October either in Tagbilaran City in Bohol or Ormoc City in Leyte.
