THE Philippine National Police (PNP) currently has two persons of interest behind the grenade attack in a mosque in Zamboanga City, according to a police official on Thursday.
Chief Supt. Emmanuel Luis Licup, Zamboanga Peninsula regional director, said in a TV interview that police have leads in identifying the two persons of interest but could not publicize operational details.
No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the grenade attack.
Authorities have yet to identify the motive behind the attack but Licup previously said it may have been motivated by the Jolo Cathedral blast on January 27.
Licup also ordered all provincial directors to coordinate with faith-based groups to prevent possible conflicts.
“Just to diffuse the tension…[We don’t want this] to escalate into atrocities between faith groups [so] the investigation is ongoing,” he said.
“We would like to ask for the sobriety and calmness of all the people of Zamboanga City. We are doing all our best to solve the incident, get to the bottom of the case and file, of course, the necessary charges against these people,” Licup said.
Muslim missionaries Sattal Bato and Rex Habil were pronounced dead at the Zamboanga City Medical Center at 12:39 a.m. after sustaining wounds from the grenade thrown by unidentified assailants.
Yasson Asgali, Paulo Slahuddin, Albani Jikilani, and Amiz Kassara, and another missionary are in stable condition, Licup said. ROY NARRA
