MERALCO recovered just in time in the second half to defeat TNT Ka Tropa, 88-77, in Season 44 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Chris Newsome scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half in addition to his nine rebounds and five assists while Baser Amer notched 15 of his 17 points in the last two quarters to prevent TNT from  getting its third consecutive victory.

Down 9-30 early in the second quarter, the Bolts unleashed a 22-2 run late in the third and early fourth quarters to lead 79-60. They were never threatened from thereon as they evened their win-loss record to 2-2.

“We tried to hang in there and we tried to get into the halftime break with just a manageable deficit,” said Meralco coach Norman Black. “We have a lot time to recover and it was good that our defense wasn’t bad in the first half. If it was, we could have gotten blown out in the first half.”

Jared Dillinger added nine of his 16 points in the second half plus nine rebounds and five assists while Ranidel De Ocampo and Nico Salva contributed 11 points apiece also for the Bolts.

Jayson Castro scored 20 points to lead the Katropa, who fell to 2-3 win-loss record.

Prior to the game, TNT came off a remarkable 104-93 upset of defending champion San Miguel Beer last Sunday.
