There will be no problem if more women are recruited in the police service as the Philippine National Police (PNP) backed on Friday a legislative measure which seeks to raise to 20 percent the annual recruitment quota for female cops.
Senior Supt. Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, said the police organization is “most welcome” to the House Bill 8689 filed by Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel which aims to allocate 20 percent of the annual recruitment for women applicants.
Banac agreed with Pimentel that the measure will allow the PNP “to achieve the ideal situation wherein female officers shall have exclusive supervision over women and children brought to police stations for custodial investigation.”
The PNP is authorized an annual recruitment quota of 10,000 Police Officers 1 (PO1).
Currently, the PNP is composed of 180,767 uniformed police personnel which is comprised of 83.4 percent male officers and 16.6 percent female officers.
Banac said women commissioned officers comprise 14 percent of the PNP Officer Corps assigned to various leadership position. (Martin A. Sadongdong)
