Office of former Speaker Alvarez biggest spender in 2017 — CoA

THE office of former Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez topped the list of lawmakers from the House of Representatives, which incurred the highest expenses in 2017, the Commission on Audit (CoA) said.
An Itemized List of Amounts Paid To and Expenses Incurred For Each House Member showed that his office spent P43.7 million in 2017.
The list, which was published on the Classified Ads section of a major daily, was from January 1 to December 31, 2017 and showed expenses incurred for “contractual consultants,” “representation,” “consultative local travel,” “communication,” “public affairs fund,” “central office staff,” and “equipt./furn. & fixtures.”
The last items referred to equipment and furniture.
Also included were “other MOOE (maintenance and other operating expenses).”
The office of Alvarez, 1st District Rep of Davao del Norte, was followed by the office of PBA Party-list Rep. Jericho Nograles with expenses totaling P23.42 million, and the office of Kalinga Rep. Allen Jesse Mangaoang with expenses totaling P22.2 million.
Also among the top 10 House lawmakers whose offices spent the most in 2017 were:
* the office of Diwa Party-list Rep. Emmeline Aglipay-Villar, P20.47 million;
* the office of North Cotabato 2nd District Rep. Nancy Catamco, P20.06 million;
* the office of Pangasinan 2nd District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil, P19.69 million;
* the office of Southern Leyte Rep. Roger Mercado, P19.67 million;
* the office of North Cotabato 1st District Rep. Jesus Sacdalan , P19.12 million;
* the office of Cagayan 3rd District Rep. Randolph Ting, P19.09 million;
* and the office of Misamis Oriental 1st District Rep. Peter Unabia, P19.04 million.
Under Section 20, Article VI of the 1987 Constitution, Congress’ books of accounts shall be audited by CoA “which shall publish annually an itemized list of amounts paid to and expenses incurred for each member.”
