MANILA, Philippines — Groundbreaking was held on Wednesday for the New Cebu International Container Port (NCICP) in Consolacion town, seen to improve Cebu’s cargo handling capacity and logistics efficiency.

The building of the port located on 25 hectares of reclaimed land in northeastern Cebu is a project supported by the Export Development Cooperation Fund of the Export-Import Bank of Korea. Construction was awarded to Korean company HJ Heavy Industries.

South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa attended the groundbreaking together with Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Bautista and Garcia said the port will have a positive impact on Filipinos’ quality of life.

Lee called it “an important project to transform Cebu into a key maritime hub in Southeast Asia and an important step toward shared prosperity between the two countries.”

“The construction of the new port is expected to significantly improve Cebu’s cargo handling capacity and logistics efficiency, attract investment, and have a positive ripple effect not only on Cebu but also on the entire Visayas region,” he said.

According to the South Korean embassy, with the entry into force of the Korea-Philippines Free Trade Association on Dec. 3, a significant increase is expected in trade and cargo volume between the two countries. This is also anticipated due to the high volume of Korean and Philippine visitors.

The ceremony was held just over a month after the signing of the civil works contract for the NCICP at Malacañang on Dec. 18 in the presence of President Marcos.
