MANILA, Philippines — Over 46,000 metric tons (MT) of red and yellow onions are expected to be harvested by the end of the first quarter, ensuring that the country would have ample supply of the prized vegetable, according to the Bureau of Plant Industry.
Latest BPI estimates showed that the country would harvest some 13,525.29 MT of red and yellow onions this month and another 33,000 MT by March.
BPI director Glenn Panganiban said that the country would have ample supply of onions, while noting that the approved 4,000-MT importation is meant as a stopgap measure to prevent any potential price spikes in the market amid depleting stocks.
“While we were assured during our consultative meetings that there is still ample supply of onions, BPI recommended minimal imports to prevent major price spikes,” Panganiban said.
