Illegal birth records due for cancellation

MANILA, Philippines — Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra on Tuesday confirmed that the Philippine Statistics Authority had endorsed to his office the cancellation of registered birth certificates fraudulently obtained by illegals, mostly Chinese.

“We have recommended to Congress the enactment of a law that would authorize administrative cancellation of such birth certificates in lieu of a tedious and expensive judicial process,” Guevarra told reporters.

Earlier in August, the National Bureau of Investigation said it discovered 1,501 fake birth records issued by the Local Civil Registrar’s office in Sta. Cruz town, Davao del Sur. —Jane Bautista
