MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has declared 24 more candidates as nuisance, preventing them from running for senator in the May 2025 midterm polls.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia reported yesterday that the poll body’s two divisions have ruled to deny due course and cancel the certificates of candidacy (COC) of 71 Senate bets so far.

The Comelec’s First Division declared 51 nuisance candidates, while the Second Division
canceled the COCs of 20 senatorial bets for being nuisance.

Last week, 47 candidates for senator were declared nuisance by the Comelec.

There are 46 pending nuisance cases still to be resolved by the Comelec, according to Garcia.

The Comelec, however, said that the ruling of the two divisions may still be appealed by the candidates.

Up to 183 aspirants filed their COCs for senator. Of the number, 66 were given the go signal by the Comelec to run in next year’s elections.

The poll body also filed petitions to declare 117 other candidates as nuisance.

Garcia also reported that the Comelec would amend its social media campaign guidelines.

He said private people would not be covered by the guidelines requiring political parties and candidates to register their online accounts with the Comelec.
