Manchester United have released their new 2024-25 home kit, which they hope will shine bright under the Old Trafford lights next season.

The club have eschewed abstract graphics and overt retro touches in favour of a straightforward design partly inspired by one of the club’s most famous historic jerseys.

The main body of the shirt has a subtle gradient from light red at the top to dark at the bottom, which is intended to give what kit manufacturer Adidas describes as “a unique glow effect.”

The visual effect is intended as a reference to the shirts worn by United’s famed “Busby Babes” side of the 1950s, whose jerseys were said to shimmer under the Old Trafford floodlights due to the synthetic Rayon material from which they were made.

The new United home shirt also bears two spikes of bright crimson on the flanks that continue down to the white shorts, while the black trim of last season’s kit has also been replaced by white details on the collar and shoulders.

Indeed, the underlying template should be familiar to anybody who has closely studied Germany‘s neon pink-and-purple away kit at Euro 2024, which is also based on the same basic Adidas “Tiro 24” template.

After an underwhelming season in which United finished eighth in the Premier League somehow ended in glory with victory in the FA Cup final, manager Erik ten Hag will be hoping he can get performances from his player next term that are as consistently bright as their shirts.
