Lazio face competition from Juventus for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, a source has told ESPN.
Lazio and United have started talks over a deal for Greenwood, who spent last season on loan with Getafe.
United are hoping to agree a fee of around £30 million ($38.1 million), although there’s an acceptance that it would likely have to be subsidised with a number of performance-based add-ons.
Lazio were close to signing Greenwood on loan a year ago before Getafe stepped in. United, according to a source, would prefer to negotiate a permanent transfer this summer rather than agreeing to another loan move.
As well as Lazio and Juventus, interest in the 22-year-old has also been registered by other Serie A clubs including Napoli. There has also been interest from clubs in Spain, Portugal and Germany.
Sources have told ESPN that Greenwood and his family are open to another move abroad while he continues to rebuild his career. The striker hasn’t played for United since January 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape and assault. The case was discontinued in February 2023.
New United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe suggested in February that the door was open for Greenwood to restart his career at Old Trafford, but while nothing has been ruled out, a source has told ESPN that a return to United is the least likely outcome this summer.
Greenwood scored 10 goals on loan at Getafe last season. Getafe, who finished 12th in LaLiga, have been keen to bring him back to the club but cannot match United’s demands.
