Pinoys urged to understand, adhere to country’s Heraldic Code

MANILA, Philippines — A descendant of Jose Rizal yesterday called on Filipinos to have greater awareness of the Heraldic Code of the Philippines during the celebration of National Flag Day in Rizal Park in Manila.
Tess Herbosa told The STAR that understanding and adhering to the code is crucial in “honoring the national flag properly.”
“You see offices and private houses displaying torn and tattered flags,” Herbosa said.
She added that Filipinos must be mindful to replace flags when they are no longer clean and know the proper way to dispose of old ones.
For Herbosa, who is part of the Salute to a Clean Flag movement as flag ambassador, the Philippine flag must be treated with respect due to the nation’s history of struggle for independence connected to it.
Salute to a Clean Flag is a non-political private sector-led initiative that aims to spark renewed interest in and love for the country by displaying the Philippine flag.
To ensure that younger generations remain connected to national heroes, she is advocating for education about the Heraldic Code starting in elementary schools.
Reflecting on this year’s National Flag Day, Herbosa underscored the Philippine flag’s significance in promoting national unity and pride.
Around 200 people representing organizations from the private sector yesterday celebrated National Flag Day, which they hope will espouse unity among Filipinos.
The flag-raising ceremony took place in front of the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City at around 8 a.m., with participants from over 30 companies and organizations showing solidarity in commemoration of the unfurling of the Philippine flag after Filipino revolutionaries defeated the Spanish troops in the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite on May 28, 1898. — Emmanuel Tupas
