James Reid unearths old wounds in new song ‘Hurt Me Too’
James Reid dropped his new single “Hurt Me Too,” a track that he wrote in 2021 and that explores the “realities of a heartbreak.”
The musician shows himself flashing wide smiles in front of the camera while mourning his broken heart behind closed doors, in the music video released on his YouTube channel on Saturday, May 25.
“It was way too much and way too fast / I just needed space / And the world they built around our love / Wouldn’t let us change / I swear I gave you my best / I know you gave me all of you / I know it hurts ’cause that sh*t hurt me too,” a verse from the song goes.
“Hurt Me Too,” which is Reid’s first project under Sony Music Entertainment, is described as a stripped-down ballad that packs an emotional punch that finds the musician “grappling with the realities of a heartbreak.”
“I wrote the song three years ago together with Seth Reger, an artist from LA. He really helped me tap into these emotions that I didn’t even know I was feeling at that moment,” he shared.
While the singer did not expound on the emotions he felt at the time, it is worth noting that it happened in the wake of his breakup with actress Nadine Lustre.
“For this next album I’m working on, I wanted to focus on the core of who I am as a songwriter with minimal but intentional music production. ‘Hurt Me Too’ is like a palate cleanser for me in a way that it introduces a change in sound and direction,” he further said of the track.
Meanwhile, Reid is currently in a relationship with actress-model Issa Pressman. They celebrated their first anniversary as a couple last month.
