48% expect better life within a year – SWS

MANILA, Philippines — About one in every two Filipinos expect the quality of their lives to improve in the next 12 months, a recent survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.
Results of the Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 survey released yesterday found that 48 percent of the respondents expect a better quality of life within a year, almost similar to the 46 percent obtained in a survey conducted in June.
The number of those who expect their lives to worsen in the next 12 months increased by a point, from five percent to six percent.
Some 40 percent said it will stay the same, down from 44 percent, while the remaining seven percent did not give an answer.
The survey resulted in a “net personal optimism” score of +42, classified as “excellent” by the polling firm. It was almost similar to the +41 obtained in the June survey.
The net personal optimism score is obatained by subtracting those who said their lives will worsen from those who said their lives will improve in the next 12 months.
Across areas, net personal optimism was still highest among respondents in Balance Luzon at +50 (from +44), followed by those in Mindanao at +43 (from +36), Metro Manila at +30 (from +41) and the Visayas at +30 (from +39).
It was highest among high school and college graduates at +46 (from +47 and +50, respectively), followed by elementary graduates at +38 (from +32) and non-elementary graduates at +30 (from +29).
The SWS said optimism for a better life was higher among those who said their lives improved in the past 12 months and those who rated themselves as “not poor.”
The survey had 1,200 adult respondents and a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent for national percentages.
