Another strong quake hits many parts of Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 6.0 earthquake rattled many parts of Mindanao anew on Sunday evening, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The earthquake was detected at 6:36 p.m. off Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur.

The tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 10 kilometers and was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.4 quake, which jolted Surigao del Sur on Saturday, Phivolcs said.

Instrumental intensity III was recorded at the City of Tandag in Surigao del Sur.

Phivolcs said that it is not expecting damage from the latest earthquake.

At 10:37 p.m. on Saturday, a magnitude 7.4 quake shook Surigao del Sur and a large portion of Mindanao, triggering tsunami alerts in the country and in Japan.

The quake took the life of a woman who was crushed by a collapsed wall in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, disaster official Mon Cabonilas said.

As of posting time, Phivolcs has recorded more than 600 aftershocks from the magnitude 7.4 earthquake.
