PH eyeing Int’l Maritime Organization council reelection – DOTr

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines, through the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is seeking reelection to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council.

In a speech by DOTr secretary Jaime Bautista and delivered by DOTr Undersecretary for Maritime Elmer Sarmiento, the Philippines can achieve more in its maritime goals as well as in protecting the welfare of Filipino seafarers as a member in the 40-member council.

“We believe our seat at the Council is rooted at our being the preferred choice of seafarers in the global crew manning market as well as being the fifth largest shipbuilding nation,” Sarmiento said during a diplomatic reception on Tuesday.

He added that the country will include environmental protection to one of its commitments by partnering with other international organizations.

“We pledge to remain a proactive member of the IMO at ensuring the safety of life and property at sea, sustainable shipping, and environmentally sound marine industry,” Sarmiento added.

The IMO is an attached agency of the United Nations that oversees world maritime affairs, such as safety, security, and the environmental protection of the marine sphere.

The Philippines joined the IMO in 1964, and was elected to the Council in 1997.
