Alleged top drug suspect slain in Davao City police operation
DAVAO CITY — An alleged top drug personality in this city was killed after a shootout with police during a law enforcement operation before dawn on Friday, authorities said.
John Roy delos Santos Badayos died from bullet wounds while being treated at a hospital after a gunfight with lawmen outside a bar in Pampanga village in this city around 12:30 a.m., said Captain Hazel Tuazon, city police spokesperson.
Tuazon said Sasa police under Major Jake Goles, together with personnel from the city intelligence unit and 1105th Maneuver Company, Regional Mobile Force Battalion, conducted the buy-bust operation against Badayos at Chill Out Bar, along Asuncion Road, Barrio Pampanga.
The 26-year-old construction worker from Upper D.A, Barangay Pampanga, was listed as a high-value individual.
As he was about to be arrested after a police officer had successfully bought from him a suspected sachet of meth, Badayos suddenly pulled out a handgun and shot the officer, who was able to take cover and fire back, hitting the suspect, the city police spokesperson recounted.
The victim was rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center for treatment but died soon after. No one among the lawmen was hurt.
Investigators recovered at the scene a .38-caliber revolver without serial number, three fired cartridges for .9mm bullets, a black belt bag containing a mobile phone and a coin purse with six sachets of suspected meth inside, a wristwatch, and jewelry.
The recovered suspected illegal drugs weighed about 7.5 grams with a street value of P120,000.
