As of June 16, 2023, there are now 40 million Canadians says Statistics Canada’s population clock, which presents growth in real time based on a number of factors such as recent trends for births, deaths and migration data.
The reason for this is almost entirely permanent and temporary migration. In 2022, the number of Canadians rose by a little over a million, with migrants accounting for nearly all the growth recorded during the year (96 per cent). This marks the first time in Canadian history that the population grew by over 1 million people in a single year, and the highest annual population growth rate on record since 1957.
“This is an exciting milestone for Canada,” says Chief Statistician Anil Arora. “It is a strong signal that Canada remains a dynamic and welcoming country, full of potential. As we head into Canada Day, this is certainly cause for celebration!”
Canada’s Indigenous population continues to grow much faster than the national average. The 2021 Census counted 1.8 million Indigenous people, accounting for 5 per cent of Canada’s total population, up from 4.9 pr cent in 2016.
And, according to Statistics Canada, if the trend continues, current projections show that Canada’s population could reach 50 million by 2043.
