The Canadian government is investing more funds to support agencies delivering services to newcomers before they arrive in Canada. Pre-arrival information helps newcomers make informed decisions about their new lives in Canada before and after they arrive, which eases their transition and supports them in finding work faster.

According to the announcement on May 11, 2023, 15 service provider organizations, based in British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario and abroad, will receive funding extensions for pre-arrival services to serve clients in their country of origin.

YMCA of the National Capital Region will receive over $1.2 million to continue delivering important pre-arrival services to new immigrants. The organization offers a broad range of services abroad, which can be accessed online and in-person. This includes pre-landing resources, including information about the Canadian workplace, employment counselling and soft skills development.

“Deciding to move to a new country is perhaps one of the biggest decisions a person will make in their life,” said Bob Gallagher, President and CEO of the YMCA of the National Capital Region. “We are thrilled to see the substantial investment made from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada into pre-arrival services. Investments like these allow the YMCA to continue providing specialized information and orientation about the skilled trades, engineering and construction sectors, and help individuals ease their transition to Canada.”

“Providing services to newcomers before they arrive in Canada is critical to successful integration,” said Marie-France Lalonde, Parliamentary Secretary to the Immigration Minister.  “These services help newcomers make decisions about the life they want to live in Canada as early as possible in their immigration journey and help them contribute to the economy more quickly. This investment will allow Canada to continue supporting the needs of newcomers across the world.”

The Canadian government announced meeting its target of 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022. This represents the largest number of people ever welcomed in a year, in Canadian history.

According to the 2023-2025 Immigration Levels Plan, the target for 2025 is to admit 500,000 new permanent residents.
