Crocodile found dead in Palawan town

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — A saltwater crocodile (Crocodilus porosus) was found dead Wednesday after it was trapped in a fish pen in Aborlan town in Palawan province.

Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) spokesperson Jovic Fabello said the crocodile was found by Celso Balbutan, a fisherman, in Sitio (sub-village) Paradahan in Barangay (village) Apo-aporawan.

Fabello added that Balbutan was about to check his fish pen for a catch at around 7 a.m. when he found the crocodile entangled in the net of the fish pen.

“The crocodile apparently died from drowning,” Fabello said.

He said Balbutan reported the incident to Apo-aporawan village chief Julie Galas who in turn reported it to PCSDS.

The reptile was a female juvenile that weighed 20 kilograms, measured six feet long and eight inches wide with a wingspan of 29 inches.

Fabello further said the crocodile was immediately buried by residents of the barangay after an inspection conducted by PCSDS.

“We also took tissue samples [of the crocodile] to at least determine whether it came from the northern or southern part of Palawan, or from outside the province,” he said, noting that Aborlan town is not known to be a habitat of crocodiles having had recorded sightings way back during the 1940s.
