MANILA, Philippines — An adobo cook-off challenge brought together Filipino-German home cooks from different German cities to celebrate and raise appreciation of the Filipino adobo in the European country as representative of Filipino culinary heritage.
To kick off its Filipino Food Month activities, the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt conducted the on-site “Adobo in Germany Challenge” during the “Likha’t Latik: Philippine Culture, Food, Art and Fashion” event in Hoerstel, Germany.
Filipino-German food enthusiasts also promote Filipino adobo as a “sustainable, healthy, and quick” food option.
Different variations of adobo such as “adobo sa gata,” “hot and smokey adobo fusion,” “pinakuratan na adobo,” “Ilocano beef adobo” and “adobo pork floss” were presented by participants in the cook-off challenge.
The Ilocano beef adobo of Lulu Sagun from Leverkusen, North Rhine Westphalia was voted by selected members of the audience/judges as the winner of the challenge.
Taking advantage of growing food trends in Germany, the Consulate encouraged Filipino-German food enthusiasts, chefs, home cooks and food vloggers to help promote adobo in Germany by introducing their various creations of adobo, with the goal of making it popular in the German/international food scene and a staple of Filipino-based fusion cuisine.
The Consulate also emphasized that with adobo’s locally sourced main ingredients such as vinegar and garlic, and other basic pantry staples such as meat and vegetables, and the dish being quick to prepare, will make it appealing with Germany’s “sustainable, healthy and quick,” food trend.
A virtual adobo promotion series, which encourages Filipino-Germans to submit a video/vlog entry on cooking adobo, will also be conducted in the latter part of the month.
Apart from the adobo activity, the Likha’t Latik event, which was organized by Germany-based Dollglam Productions, also offered a variety of activities such as Filipino food booths, song/dance performances, and a fashion show featuring the designs of Filipino fashion designers in Germany and other European countries.
