UAAP: UST posts second straight win in men’s volleyball

MANILA, Philippines — Josh Ybanez and GBoy De Vega led University of Santo Tomas to its second straight win, keeping University of the Philippines winless, 25-22, 25-18, 25- 17, in the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at Philsports Arena.

Rookie Ybanez sustained his fine play with 13 points built on eight attacks, four blocks, and an ace on top of eight excellent receptions.

De Vega also scored 13 points and had six receptions as UST rose to 4-1, joining Far Eastern University in second place.

“We just followed what coach said during our meeting: Do your best, learn, and enjoy,” said Ybanez.

UST coach Odjie Mamon was pleased with the performance of his wards, who only committed 23 errors compared to their 49 miscues during their five-set win over Adamson last Wednesday.

“Stress-free game,” said Mamon in Filipino. “Our service was on target and we limited UP’s options. The passing of GBoy and Josh worked. Good job.”

Paul Colinares was also instrumental with nine points, highlighted by four blocks, including the game-winning rejection on Louis Gamban. Dux Yambao paced UST with 20 excellent sets on top of seven digs and four points, while Rainer Flor added eight markers.

UP absorbed its fifth straight defeat with Gamban leading the way with 11 points and nine digs. Angelo Lagando added 10 markers, including four blocks in another loss.
