Stay safe and warm this snowy season with proper gear and boots from Mark’s

Whether it’s your very first Canadian winter — or even your second, third, fourth, fifth — preparing for the cold temperatures in Canada can be a culture shock to the system. While the beauty of the snowy landscape can be awe-inspiring, it’s important to bundle up so you can enjoy it safely and comfortably. With the right gear, experiencing your first winter in Canada can be an exhilarating adventure.

Staying warm in the great outdoors

When it comes to surviving and thriving through a Canadian winter, there are lots of considerations, from preparing your home with efficient heating, to putting good tires on your car. But just as important is preparing what you put on yourself, from head to toe! Here are some guidelines for dressing warmly and safely.

Walk confidently in the snow with the right boots

Starting from the bottom, let’s talk about keeping your feet warm, dry and stable. Slipping on ice can mean a hard landing and even injuries, so let’s avoid that with the right winter boots. You will want boots that are waterproof, insulated and have good grip.

Not all boots in stores are made equal, so it’s a good idea to trust a longstanding Canadian brand like Mark’s, whose mission is to keep people safer, drier, warmer and more comfortable for every season. For example, its IceFX® boots use cutting-edge technology for advanced safety in snowy and icy conditions, making in safer to walk on ice.

Mark’s IceFX® boots have an innovative tread design that was developed by Mark’s in-house innovation experts and supported by the KITE Research Institute. This proprietary technology is paired with unique materials including a  durable, abrasive quartz infused rubber called Green Diamond Grip and an abrasive fibre-like material called Icelandic Grip, that combined provide greater surface contact in the heel strike zone and forefoot to achieve an anti slip outsole.

The KITE Research Institute is a globally recognized research facility that is part of the University HealthNetwork in Toronto. Its WinterLab is home to 128 scientists and nearly 500 staff studying how challenging icy, snowy and cold conditions impact mobility and safety. KITE researchers developed the “snowflake rating” program to measure anti-slip boots. A boot with at least one or two snowflakes reduces the risk of falls by 78 per cent.

Bundle up to stay warm

While keeping your feet warm and dry is a priority in a Canadian winter, let’s not forget the importance of the coat and clothes you wear, too. One quick tip: the colder it is, the more layers you may need.

A warm and waterproof winter coat is a must. Depending on how cold it gets in your region of Canada, you can pick from a variety of styles: ski jackets, puffer jackets or winter parkas. Whatever the style, quality here matters, like with your boots. Many will have temperature ratings to help guide your decision.

Underneath your coat, a long-sleeved shirt and/or sweater is best, along with warm socks or stockings, and pants. Top it all off with mittens or gloves, and a scarf and toque. For your kids, consider putting them in snowpants, especially if they will be playing outside.

If temperatures drop below zero or winds are high, consider adding a thermal layer of long underwear, on top and bottom. Layering up is important as it will help keep the heat while outside, and you can take some layers off when going indoors.

With all the right gear, you can brave the cold weather with confidence and enjoy the snow. Looking for some inspiration?  Find some fun winter activities for the whole family here.
