An eclectic mix of artists from across Canada and around the globe come together to perform at the Small World Music Festival in Toronto. The three-day event kicks off on Friday, September 16 and runs through to Sunday, September 18 at Fort York Garrison Common.
The outdoor festival is free and accessible for all ages, featuring a range of live music, food, arts and crafts and more.
Domestic highlights include an array of Toronto locals: Pantayo, will deliver their electro-synth-pop rooted in southern Philippine Kulintang (gong ensemble) traditions; Moneka Arabic Jazz celebrates Afro-Arabic jazz from the Middle East and North Africa with signature flair; Toronto-based Bahia, Brazil native, JER, merges electronic, ska, rock, dub, Brazilian fusion and more; Cartagena, Colombia/Toronto group, Soukustek, combines traditional soukous, a style of dance music derived from Congolese rumba, with Colombian folklore; local collective, FabCollab, presents Women in Song: Summer Thunder, a collaboration celebrating women from across the musical spectrum.
The Festival will also welcome a stellar list of Quebec artists: Funk Lion, a Montreal-based band fusing funk and psych-rock with their Haitian roots; Clerel shares his soulful tunes and sweet vocals; HAWA B showcases powerhouse vocals via soul, alt-rock, jazz, R’n’B and beyond; Joyce N’Sana will share her unique “Afrobluehop” sound, melding Afroblues and hip-hop into an infectious and captivating live experience. Shauit celebrates the traditional Innu music of his home with folk and reggae inflections.
A number of international artists will also make special appearances.
In 2020, the festival was held online, and 2021 was a half-online, half-live hybrid event.
“This year, back ‘for real’ after three years is a major thrill,” says Alan Davis, Founder of Small World Music Festival. “A free, outdoor family (and pet!) friendly event, the festival aims, as always, to showcase and celebrate diversity, hand in hand with the myriad communities with whom we work. Two stages showcasing some of the most exciting global music from Canada and abroad is a great excuse for a party!”
