Follow along as we look back at the moments that made headlines each day during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Feb. 27, 2010: After narrowly missing out on triple gold a day prior, Canadian athletes dominated the penultimate day of the Vancouver Games, winning three of the seven gold medals up for grabs.
In the men’s curling final, the Canadian crew skipped by Edmonton’s Kevin Martin dispatched a Norwegian team beloved for their colourful pants. The gold medal Canadians ended the Olympic tournament 9-0, becoming the first curlers to run the table since the British in 1924.
At Cypress Mountain, snowboarder Jasey-Jay Anderson won Canada’s 12th gold medal in the men’s parallel giant slalom. The 34-year old veteran cemented his reputation as the best snowboarder in Canadian history, narrowly edging Austria’s Karl Benjamin at the finish line to win the event.
And at the Richmond Olympic Oval, the men’s long track speedskaters were surprise winners in the team pursuit. The trio of Mathieu Giroux, Lucas Makowsky, and Denny Morrison, reached the final after setting Olympic records in the quarterfinal and semifinal, and in the final, they outdid themselves once again. Good thing too: they finished just 21 hundredths of a second ahead of their American opponents to claim Canada’s 13th gold medal of the Games.
