If you hear the hum of vacuums and blow dryers while walking through Pacific Centre, don’t worry, it’s not your imagination.
Dyson, the British technology company created by Sir James Dyson, has opened its first Dyson Demo store in Vancouver — its second such location in Canada.
In addition to offering hands-on access to a full range of the company’s products, the retail store also features a hairstyling bar offering access to three styling stations where visitors can have their hair blow-dried and styled with the brand’s two styling tools.
We caught up with Nichola Clifton, a senior design engineer at Dyson, to learn more.
Q. For anyone who isn’t familiar, what is Dyson?
A. Dyson is a global technology company that employs more than 14,000 people globally, including 5,850 engineers and scientists. While it all started with the cyclonic bagless vacuum, DC01, today, Dyson is known for much more than just vacuums. More recently, we’ve turned our attention to hand hygiene, air quality, light quality and protecting hair from damage with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer and the Airwrap styler.
Q. What made this the right time to open a demo store in Vancouver?
A. The best way to understand Dyson technology is to get hands on. With the Dyson Demo in Pacific Centre, people are free to pick up, test and trial our technologies in a distraction-free environment, with the support of our experts. We’ve seen success in this approach across the globe in Toronto, L.A., Shanghai, China, Istanbul and New York. Now, we would like to bring this experience to people in Vancouver.
Vancouver is known as a hub for health, wellness and beauty, with a large and diverse population, and our products cater to a wide variety of needs. So, we think the community will enjoy the opportunity to experience Dyson technology first-hand.
Q. And what can shoppers expect to find in-store?
A. These Dyson Demos are a great space for us to connect and educate people on why our technologies are engineered in a certain way, and to explain how our technology works to solve their problems.
Q. The space also has a beauty bar. What more can you share about this?
A. The bespoke healthy hair styling demos we offer at the beauty bar are complimentary for visitors. … This allows them the opportunity to chat with an expert and discover the exact styling tools and attachments that will work best with their hair type. Appointments can be booked in advance on the Dyson Demo Vancouver website page.
Q. Lastly, any other plans you can share for the company in Canada?
A. At Dyson, we like to keep our secrets, secret, so I can’t share much about our plans for what’s next. What I can say is that Dyson started in Canada in 2006 with just two machines in its range. Today, we bring our latest products across several categories to the country and Dyson Demo stores offer us the ability to get more people to experience it for themselves. As we grow in Canada and around the world, it will continue to be important for us to look after existing and future Dyson owners, so that they understand how our products work better and can improve their lives.
