The B.C. Coroners Service and the RCMP are both investigating a weekend collision between two transport trucks near Revelstoke that left two people dead.
The accident happened around 7:50 a.m. on Highway 1, 20 kilometres west of Revelstoke near the community of Three Valley Gap.
Police say an eastbound commercial tractor-trailer lost control and slid sideways across the highway and struck a westbound commercial transport truck, causing both vehicles to ignite into flames.
The driver and passenger of the eastbound truck were not able to get out of the vehicle and died at the scene.
“RCMP have notified the families of the deceased in Ontario,” the RCMP said in a press release.
The other driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries
No names were released.
The RCMP said initial indications suggest that speed relative to poor road condition was a contributing factor in the accident.
“The weather throughout British Columbia is always changing. Although the speed limit in the area was posted at 70 kilometres per hour, it is essential that all drivers always drive to the road conditions. This often means driving well below the speed limit,” said RCMP traffic services Sgt. Rob Haney.
