Kelowna RCMP investigators have charged an 18-year-old female with manslaughter in connection to the death of 16-year-old Elijah Beauregard in 2019.

Beauregard was stabbed on June 27 and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. He underwent emergency surgery but did not survive.

The female has been remanded into police custody until Feb. 24, when she will appear before the Youth Justice Court in Kelowna. Her name will not be released because she was a youth at the time of the offence and is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Beauregard grew up in Calagary, and his father Bob Beauregard told the Calgary Herald last year that Elijah had moved to Kelowna in November 2018 after what was supposed to be a two-week stay visiting his mother turned into a permanent spot.

Beauregard said Elijah was struggling in school and had turned to the streets. He said his son had been drinking with some people on the night of June 27 when someone attempted to stab him with a broken bottle. The boy’s arm was sliced as he held it up to shield himself from the attack.

Elijah remained in a medically induced coma as doctors amputated his arm, but they told the father there was a lack of oxygen to his brain for so long, they feared there would be severe brain damage. A subsequent 12-hour EEG showed there was next to no brain activity and he died on June 30.
