Impaired driving is down in the Ridge Meadows area but the work isn’t over yet.

Ridge Meadows RCMP shared an update Wednesday on Project Domino, which was launched in May 2018 after seven fatal motor-vehicle accidents linked to impaired driving occurred over the course of a year. The project aimed to track and target impaired drivers, whether by alcohol or drugs.

Between May 2018 and March 2019, the targeted enforcement helped reduce the number of fatal motor-vehicle incidents linked to impairment to two. Between March 2019 and February 2020, there were none related to impaired driving.

The number of impaired-driving investigations has also increased as a result of the targeted enforcement, from 279 in 2017, to 486 in 2018 and 553 in 2019.

“The results of the program are astounding and surpassed our expectations,” said RCMP Const. Julie Klaussner. “By November of 2019 we had already surpassed the total number of 2018 impaired investigations. It is evident people are still choosing to drive while impaired.”

Of the nine fatal incidents recorded since 2017, four have resulted in criminal charges approved by the Crown.
