A doctor was abducted by alleged Abu Sayyaf rebels in his own clinic in Jolo, Sulu, prompting the military to initiate search and rescue operations.
Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Armed Forces’ Western Mindanao Command, said Dr. Daniel Moreno was kidnapped by four fully armed men at Barangay Walled City at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Upon receiving information of Moreno’s abduction, Sobejana said he immediately ordered pursuit operations and tapped his special units to rescue the doctor.
Abu Sayyaf rebels, aboard a maroon van, headed to the Sta. Nina Rasul Complex and then to Indanan.
“All units established checkpoints and blocked possible ingress and egress points as of this press time,” said Maj. Arvin Encinas, WestMinCom spokesman.
The Metro Jolo Interagency Task Group of soldiers and policemen were tasked to conduct rescue operations on Moreno, as well as enforce the arrest of his captors.
Moreno’s abduction came less than a month after Abu Sayyaf also kidnapped five Indonesian fishermen off Sabah.
Sobejana had said that the Indonesian fishermen were brought to Sulu, the stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf Group.
Eight Indonesians were abducted initially but three of them were released and related how the Abu Sayyaf used a speedboat to escape toward Sulu. DEMPSEY REYES
