Side Dishes: Chocolate two ways

Here’s a couple of unique ways to enjoy chocolate.

East Van Roasters, the non-profit social enterprise organization, will see the return of the annual Buddha of Compassionate Love chocolate for Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day.

This year, the round-bellied 70 per cent chocolate Buddha will be filled with mango pate de fruit and Madagascan ganache flavoured with star anise and orange. The Buddha shell is made with 70 per cent Peruvian single origin chocolate. The two-inch filled Buddha sells for $4, or $5 in a box.

And Beta5 Chocolates has teamed up with DL Chicken Shack for a hot little number: the Side of Milk chocolate bar with DL’s Carolina Reaper chili dust blend and crispy chicken skin. What, you say? Yep, it’s getting to be a thing.

“The spice lingers and the crispy chicken skin gives it that saltiness and slight crunch,” says Doug Stephen of DL Chicken Shack. The chocolate bar, available at DL Chicken (905 Commercial Drive) and Beta5 (409 Industrial Ave.) is $11.  Available until Valentine’s Day.

• Street Food City, Dine Out Vancouver’s annual food truck fest, will be back at the Vancouver Art Gallery plaza from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6 with 25 food trucks on rotation.

Tents provided by EVO Care Share and music will ease the chill and discomfort of winter. Trucks include Cannoli King, Chickpea, Come Arepa, Mama’s Fish and Chips, Reel Mac and Cheese ,and Tacofino. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
