Headlining this week’s picks is Blues for the Bushfires, a fundraiser for WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue Organization and the Australian Red Cross.

Aussie transplant Rowen Porter (pictured) has organized this bill of local talent to raise money for WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue Organization and the Australian Red Cross. “There are a lot of Australians here in Vancouver, and I know a lot of us are feeling like we can’t really help because we are so far from home,” said the singer-songwriter, who recently released her debut EP Everything At Once. “So this is a way we can help in Vancouver. Lots of the other artists on the bill have friends Down Under that they want to help out too.” Other acts include Sandy Bone, Joni Miller and The Usual Suspects, and Alvaro Rojas.

After Jack White encouraged Mattiel Brown to pursue her rock ‘n’ roll dreams, the former graphic designer teamed up with her songwriting partners to record and release their 2017 full-length debut. The Atlanta-based band followed up with some acclaimed live shows and TV appearances. Their latest is Satis Factory, a record with influences ranging from the Velvet Underground to the Clash.

Untold Wants Theatre presents this unusual love story in time for Valentine’s Day. In the 2009 Rajiv Joseph play, Doug and Kayleen (Éanna O’Dowd and India Shaw-Smith, pictured) find each other again at pivotal moments of injury, over the course of 30 years. It gets complicated. The cast and crew is made up of “young yet seasoned professionals,” according to the press release. This is Untold Wants Theatre’s third production, following 2018’s The Human Ear, and last year’s Cock.

Avail yourself of award-winning craft spirits and liqueurs, paired with hors d’oeuvres (from Lakeside Beach Club) and live entertainment. Sample beverages like Gringo’s Revenge from Taynton Bay Spirits, or the Green Frog Absynthe from Alchemist Distiller, or Sheringham Distilleries award-winning Seaside Gin. In addition, there’ll be an on-site store, silent auction, 50/50 draw, and photo booth. Proceeds from the event will be used to help fund the Chilliwack Academy of Music, which is also providing some of the evening’s live entertainment.

If you see only one all-male ballet show this year, make sure it’s Les Ballets Trockadero. Expect a blend of comedic antics and serious dancing chops in send-ups of ballet classics and contemporary dance works. Founded by a group of professional dancers in 1974, the New York-based company has been lauded by critics. The corps has several new dancers since it last came to Vancouver.

The Toronto-based trio plays a mix of folk, bluegrass, jazz, and chamber-oriented roots music. Backed by Mike Mezzatesta (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, mandola) and James McEleney (bass, mandocello, and vocals), Collins (who has worked with the Foggy Hogtown Boys and The Creaking Tree) plays mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola, and mandocello, and sings. They’ll play tracks from their latest album, a double-disc called Tongue & Groove that is divided between instrumental and vocal tracks, including songs like Just a Gigolo and I Drink Whiskey (My Gal Drinks Wine). Their live shows are marked by spontaneity and improvisation. Opening the show is Annie Lou, an Americana singer/songwriter from Parksville.

Align Entertainment (Annie) presents this live musical adaptation of the animated DreamWorks feature (Pictured are local performers Jodie Massey, Maddie Livland, and Ava Gil). “One of the best life lessons that comes out of Shrek is how important it is to be yourself,” says Align’s director and co-producer Chad Matchette.
